A look inside our family's Eid morning traditions, from pre-dawn prep to post-prayer chaos.
Every family does Eid differently. Here's what our mornings look like.
My alarm goes off at 5am. Way too early considering I was up late the night before, but Eid waits for no one. The house smells like the mamoul my mother made yesterday - she still insists on making them from scratch even though none of us would judge her for buying them.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us:
"The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to not go out on the day of Eid al-Fitr until he had eaten some dates, and he would eat an odd number." — Sahih al-Bukhari 953
We all gather for a small breakfast before heading to prayer. Just dates and something light. The Prophet (peace be upon him) would eat dates before Eid prayer, so we do the same. Plus it gives us energy for what's always a long morning.
Getting everyone ready is chaos. Always has been, always will be. Someone can't find their shoes. Someone else needs help with their hijab pins. My father has been ready since 4:30am and is sitting by the door looking at his watch.
Allah tells us:
"Say, 'In the bounty of Allah and in His mercy - in that let them rejoice; it is better than what they accumulate.'" — Quran 10:58
The prayer itself is my favorite part of the whole day. Seeing the community gathered. The kids in their new clothes looking excited and slightly confused. The khutbah reminding us what this day is actually about.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"For every people there is a feast and this is our feast." — Sahih al-Bukhari 952
Make this Eid unforgettable. Dress your family in beautiful modest fashion. From kids' thobes to elegant hijabs, we have everything for a picture-perfect Eid morning.
After prayer, the real marathon begins. House visits, phone calls, more food than any human should consume. My mother insisting everyone looks too thin while simultaneously pushing third helpings.
It's exhausting in the best way. By Maghrib I'm completely spent. But every year, without fail, I catch myself thinking: this is what it's all about. Family. Gratitude. Celebration.
May your Eid be full of exactly this kind of exhaustion.
Eid morning is too precious to spend stressed about outfits. If you want to get ahead of it this year, start browsing now.
