A personal reflection on a simple kufi that carries forty years of memories and love.
I have a kufi that I never wear.
It sits in a box in my closet, wrapped in cloth. It's nothing fancy - plain white, slightly yellowed with age, a few threads coming loose at the edges.
My grandfather gave it to me when I was seventeen. He wore it for over forty years. Every Jumuah, every Eid, every prayer at home. It was as much a part of him as his smile or his habit of calling everyone "habibi."
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"He is not one of us who does not have mercy on our young and does not respect our elders." — Sunan al-Tirmidhi 1919
He passed away six years ago. The kufi was one of the only things I asked for.
I don't wear it because I'm afraid of ruining it. Of it falling apart completely. Of losing this tangible connection to a man I still miss every single day.
Allah tells us:
"And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age while with you, say not to them so much as 'uff,' and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word." — Quran 17:23
Sometimes I just take it out and hold it. Press it to my face. Try to remember what it felt like to sit next to him in the masjid, his hand on my shoulder, his voice low during dhikr.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said:
"When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him." — Sahih Muslim 1631
Start your own legacy. Our handcrafted kufis are made to last generations. Quality craftsmanship that your grandchildren will treasure.
This isn't really a post about kufis. It's about what we carry with us. The objects that hold more than their physical weight. The things that connect us to people we can no longer see.
If you have something like this - an item from someone you've lost - I hope you hold onto it. Take it out sometimes. Let the memories come.
They don't make us sad. They make us grateful we had something worth missing.
Some things carry more than just fabric - they carry memory. If you're looking for a kufi with that kind of craftsmanship, we might have what you need.
