Practical tips for making Fajr prayer in the cold, dark winter months.
It's 6:15am. Pitch dark outside. My room is cold because I refuse to run the heating all night. My bed is warm. Very warm.
And my alarm is going off for Fajr.
The winter struggle is real.
Summer Fajr, you're up at 4am but at least there's light coming through the window. Some energy in the air. Winter Fajr? Everything in your body is screaming to stay in bed.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"The most difficult prayers for the hypocrites are Isha and Fajr. If they knew what blessings they have, they would come to them even if they had to crawl." — Sahih al-Bukhari 657
Every time I struggle, I think about that. I don't want to be in that category.
Here's what helps me:
The alarm goes across the room. Not on my phone next to me. Not within arm's reach. I have to physically get up to turn it off. Once I'm standing, I'm awake.
Wudu with warm water. I know cold water is more "hardcore" but I'm not trying to shock my system. Warm water, still counts.
Heater in the bathroom on a timer. It comes on ten minutes before Fajr. By the time I get there, it's not freezing.
Allah tells us:
"Establish prayer at the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night and also the Quran at dawn. Indeed, the recitation at dawn is ever witnessed." — Quran 17:78
And the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave us this beautiful motivation:
"Whoever prays Fajr is under the protection of Allah." — Sahih Muslim 657
